Description

The IFC-Canada Climate Change Program financed advisory services to assist the authorities of the City of Belgrade, Serbia in structuring a sustainable and bankable public-private partnership (PPP) project to create municipal waste treatment facilities. The city, with a population of 1.7 million people that generates about 600,000 tons of municipal waste per year, is seeking to improve its waste treatment and disposal practices to be compliant with national and European Union legislation.

Results/Expected Outcomes

The successful implementation of the project is expected to result in the mobilization of private sector investment and improvement of environmental conditions through upgraded waste management practices for the City of Belgrade. The project is also expected to lead to an estimated greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 200,000 metric tons of CO2 per year.*
