Delivery Partner(s):

Description

The Canadian Climate Fund for the Private Sector in Asia (CFPS) at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided technical assistance to examine the feasibility of using renewable energy to run telecommunications infrastructure. Myanmar is expanding its mobile telecommunications network to increase access among poor communities to this vital service. Canada’s contribution will ensure that Myanmar’s future telecommunication infrastructure rests on a sustainable foundation, running a trial of the use of renewable energy at selected telecom transmission towers. Myanmar remains one of the least-connected countries in the world in terms of telecommunications and technology. Better connectivity infrastructure contributes to sustainable economic growth by promoting the mobility of the population from less productive sectors and also by improving the productivity of certain sectors.

Results/Expected Outcomes

While helping mitigate Myanmar’s issues with extremely low coverage, this project will help create a sustainable telecommunications network that relies on renewable energy. The expected development impacts as a result of project activities include: 1,500 renewable energy towers installed; 4.5 megawatts MW of renewable energy installed capacity; 5.4 GWh per year of renewable energy generation; emissions reduction of 10,000 metric tons of CO2 per year; and, increase in energy access for 10,000 households.
