Description
The IFC-Canada Climate Change Program financed advisory services for reducing energy consumption in Brazil’s growing hospitality industry. The project aims to develop the energy efficiency finance market in the hotel sector, where more than 130,000 hotels across the country represent a significant potential for reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions. The project supports selected energy services companies to carry out energy audits in hotels, as well as to define and structure energy efficiency projects, present bankable hotel projects to financial institutions in order to secure needed financing, and to implement energy efficiency projects in hotels. These energy efficiency projects would focus primarily on improving air conditioning equipment, introducing solar water heating, conserving water and using alternative water sources, enhancing energy management techniques, and improving power quality. The project will also prepare case studies and disseminate lessons of experience in order to support potential replication effort in other parts of Latin America.
Results/Expected Outcomes
With support from Canada's contribution, this initiative expects that at least 50 participating hotels from different regions of the country will effectively reduce energy usage, including natural gas and other fossil fuels. To date, 230 hotels from 5 regions of Brazil have enrolled in the Pro-Hoteis Program. Of these, 57 hotels have already received assistance to implement energy efficiency measures and 43 hotels have secured financing worth US$8.3 million. This project is expected to mobilize an additional $500,000 in co-financing from other public and private sources and lead to an estimated greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 6,900 metric tons of CO2 per year.*
