Providencia Solar PV Project

Canada’s Total Contribution: $30,000,000

Targeted Countries: El Salvador

Funding Period: 2011/2012

Delivery Partner(s):

The Canadian Climate Fund for the Private Sector in the Americas (C2F) at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) provided support for the first utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project in El Salvador. It aims to increase the supply of non-traditional renewable energy and support the Government’s priorities to ensure a stable and diversified long-term electricity supply, particularly from clean sources. The project will consist of the construction, operation and maintenance of a solar PV power plant and its associated facilities.

Results/Expected Outcomes

The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include the installation of 80 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity in two plants, which will sell most of this power at one of the lowest prices in Central America, Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole. The project will provide 173,156 megawatt hours (MWh) each year of electricity from renewable sources to the Salvadorian grid, thus decreasing thermal and hydro generation reliance. It is also expected to result in the abatement of an estimated 114,500 tons of CO2 each year.

Project activities are expected to create over 200 jobs during the construction and operational phase. In addition, the project aims to improve social economic development in nearby communities, by allocating 3 percent of revenues generated to finance high priority social investments.
