African Adaptation Research Centres: From Research to Policy: Linking climate change adaptation to sustainable agriculture in Southern Africa

Canada’s Total Contribution: $1,500,000

Targeted Countries: Lesotho Malawi Swaziland

Funding Period: 2010/2011

Delivery Partner(s):

This contribution is part of Canada's $10 million Fast-start contribution to the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to support the African Adaptation Research Centres Initiative. This project aimed at improving the integration of climate change research into food security policy in South Africa, Malawi, Lesotho, and Swaziland.

Results/Expected Outcomes

With support from Canada’s contribution the project is refining an existing Household Vulnerability Index tool to incorporate impacts on crop yields, according to downscaled climate change scenarios. It is also conducting a cost-benefit analysis on the investments required to adapt at the district level, which are expected to impact the allocation of resources for adaptation. Research from this project has contributed to the book "Southern African agriculture and climate change: A comprehensive analysis," recently published by the International Food Policy Research Institute.
