Library of climate resources

This is a collection of links to climate datasets, tools, guidance and related resources. The sources include the federal government, provincial and territorial governments, national professional organizations, climate consortia and established international organizations. It can be useful for impact, vulnerability and risk assessments, and for adaptation planning.

Refine your search using the search filters. You can also type up to 5 keywords in the search bar.

Explanation of the different resource types
  • data product - downloadable climate dataset
  • tool - builds on a dataset with further analyses and/or visualization
  • guidance - provides direction on the use of climate information or on conducting climate-related assessments
  • codes and standards - guidance and best practice documents for climate resilient design
  • additional resources include educational and awareness-raising material, impact assessments and scientific syntheses

  • Adjusted/homogenized climate data (Opens in a new Window)

Adjusted and homogenized climate datasets consist of monthly, seasonal, and annual means of homogenized daily maximum, minimum, and mean surface temperature, daily precipitation, hourly wind speed, and hourly station and sea level pressure across Canada. The data have been adjusted to account for discontinuities in the data from non-climatic factors such as changes in observation methods or station location. Sites are also sometimes combined resulting in longer time series.

Agroclimate Maps (Opens in a new Window)

Agroclimate maps display agroclimate conditions in Canada. Available maps include both current agroclimate conditions and historic agroclimate conditions. Agroclimate variables include precipitation characteristics, temperature, and drought indices. Maps can be seen based on region and time span (from Weekly to 5 years). National, Pacific, Prairie, Central, Atlantic, and Ontario maps can be selected.

An inventory of historical climate data and climate projections for the Canadian North (Opens in a new Window)

This collaborative report presents the work done by the Northern Climate Data Working Group Phase I, which was created in December 2020 by the Canadian Centre for Climate Services with researchers and scientists from a wide range of universities and organizations. The report constitutes a large inventory of datasets that can be useful for future development of climate products to support climate-change adaptation decision-making in the Canadian North. Datasets for meteorological, snow, hydrology, sea ice, and permafrost variables were analyzed for the historical period and for future projections. The main information is presented in the form of tables with links to websites and descriptive documents, many of which are attached as annexes. The Phase II of the Working Group has transformed the inventory presented in this report into an online searchable database (https://nordata.physics.utoronto.ca/en/) A PDF copy of this report is available upon request. Please contact Emilia.Diaconescu@ec.gc.ca if interested.

Atlas of Community-Based Monitoring & Indigenous Knowledge in a Changing Arctic (Opens in a new Window)

The Atlas of Community Based Monitoring & Indigenous Knowledge in a Changing Arctic was designed to showcase the many community-based monitoring and Indigenous Knowledge initiatives across the circumpolar region. These initiatives assist with network building and identification of best practices and challenges for the field. In an interactive map, users can view ongoing projects in various locations in the Circumpolar Arctic.

Canadian Blended Precipitation version 0 CanBPv0 (Opens in a new Window)

Canadian Blended Precipitation Datasets contain blended precipitation measurements from gauges (in situ) and satellite (remote) data. Historic precipitation rates are provided as mean monthly precipitation in mm/day across Canada between January 1979 and December 2007. Gridded data are provided at a resolution of half degree.

Canadian Climate Normals (Opens in a new Window)

The Canadian Climate Normals dataset contains 30-year averages of temperature, precipitation, snow depth and extreme climatic conditions at monitoring stations across Canada with at least 15 years of data. Data can be searched by station name, province, or proximity to user. Data are offered for three averaging periods: 1981-2010, 1971-2000 and 1961-1990. The values contained in this dataset are updated at the end of each decade.

Canadian Drought Monitor (Opens in a new Window)

The Canadian Drought Monitor (CDM) uses a classification system that defines severity, extent, and impacts of drought to monitor and report drought. This dataset includes a variety of information regarding the monitoring and reporting of drought. This includes current drought conditions, drought analysis, historic drought maps and data, and the Canadian Drought Monitor application. Current drought severity is shown in polygon format.

Canadian Gridded Temperature and Precipitation Anomalies (CANGRD) (Opens in a new Window)

Gridded historical climate data, also known as Canadian gridded datasets (CanGRD), include gridded temperature and precipitation anomalies (i.e., differences from a reference period) across Canada. Annual, seasonal, and monthly historical gridded data are available. CanGRD data were interpolated from the Adjusted and Homogenized Canadian Climate Data (AHCCD) and are used to produce the Climate Trends and Variations Bulletin.

CC-Bio: Maps and Data (Opens in a new Window)

CC-Bio is a project to predict potential effects of climate change on the distribution and abundance of a large range of plant and animal species from Quebec. CC-Bio supports regional strategies of adaptation to climate change in the field of biodiversity conservation. Advanced statistical techniques are used to develop quantitative models representing the complex relationships between species distributions and environmental variables, including climate. The website modeling results for 681 species of amphibians, birds, and plants for which potential effects of climate change have been analyzed are available for view. Results for 84 tree species have not yet been made public (for these species, contact rine.perie_at_mrnf.gouv.qc.ca).
