Library of climate resources

This is a collection of links to climate datasets, tools, guidance and related resources. The sources include the federal government, provincial and territorial governments, national professional organizations, climate consortia and established international organizations. It can be useful for impact, vulnerability and risk assessments, and for adaptation planning.

Refine your search using the search filters. You can also type up to 5 keywords in the search bar.

Explanation of the different resource types
  • data product - downloadable climate dataset
  • tool - builds on a dataset with further analyses and/or visualization
  • guidance - provides direction on the use of climate information or on conducting climate-related assessments
  • codes and standards - guidance and best practice documents for climate resilient design
  • additional resources include educational and awareness-raising material, impact assessments and scientific syntheses

  • CMIP6 climate scenarios (Opens in a new Window)

This webpage provides information and climate scenario results from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models (GCMs), whose results were used in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report (AR6). CMIP6 projections are based on the Shared Socio-economic Pathway (SSP) scenarios. For a Canadian perspective, the time series graphs, maps, and tabular data presented here are based on a multi-model ensemble of CMIP6 GCMs interpolated to a common 1x1 degree grid. Global gridded formats are available for the multi-model ensembles as well as for individual GCM outputs. A subset of CMIP6 daily predictor variables that can be used for statistical downscaling of GCMs are also available for download.

Engineering Climate Data Sets (Opens in a new Window)

Engineering Climate Datasets contain: Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) Files, the Canadian Weather Energy and Engineering Datasets (CWEEDS) and the Canadian Weather Year for Energy Calculation (CWEC) dataset. The IDF dataset contains short duration rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) statistics. Data are presented as tables and graphs for various locations across Canada. CWEEDS provides hourly and long-term weather conditions at monitoring stations across Canada with at least 10 years of records between 1998 and 2014. CWEC datasets contain 12 calculated "Typical Meteorological Months" selected from a 30 years of records, including daily global radiation, dry-bulb temperature, dew-point temperature and wind speed.

Forest Change Adaptation Tools (Opens in a new Window)

Forest Change adaptation tools provides information about the impacts of climate change on Canada’s forests and on how to adapt to changing climate conditions. Adaptation tools and resources for forest managers are available here. The tools and resources provided include maps, databases, web applications and synthesis reports. They are grouped under three broad systems: climate, forest and human.

Forest Change Data Catalogue (Opens in a new Window)

The Forest Climate Change Data Catalogue is a collection of data sets that are relevant to the Canadian forest sector under a changing climate. Created by Canadian Forest Service scientists, these data sets include static maps, raw data (both point and gridded), and interactive maps that cover all of Canada. Data themes include drought, fire, climate and tree distribution; multiple climate scenarios are projected to the year 2100. The data sets will be periodically updated as new information becomes available.

Paleo-environmental records of climate change across Canada - Vegetation History, Glaciated North America (Opens in a new Window)

Paleo-environmental records of climate change across Canada contains paleogeographic data from the last 18,000 years. Historical data from across Canada have been assembled, synthesized, published, and web-enabled to help guide climate change adaptation strategies.

Plant Hardiness Zone Maps of Canada (Opens in a new Window)

Plant Hardiness Zone Maps of Canada provide gridded information about where different types of plants can grow. They combine climatic information from across Canada and are available for two historical periods: 1961-1990 and 1981-2010. Projected future range maps are also available for a number of species of trees, shrubs, and perennial herbs. Climate profiles are available for plant species based on distribution data and climate models.

Regional, national and international climate modeling (Opens in a new Window)

Regional, national and international climate modeling contains a database of numerous climate variables for Canada and the USA. Historical and future periods are available as modelled point and gridded data. Data are available as 30-year averages (e.g. 1961/90; 1971/2000, etc.), historical month-by-month (from the late 1800s), and daily values (from the 1950s) all for a number of variables, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) climate change scenarios, and climate models. Future time periods include all years to 2100 and 30-year means for 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100.

Seasonal forecasts (Opens in a new Window)

Seasonal forecasts include probabilistic and deterministic forecasts as well as past climate trends of temperature, precipitation, sea surface temperature, and snow cover across Canada. Climatological trends of temperature and precipitation are available for each season as well as annual periods over the historical period of 1981-2010. Forecasts for 3, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months into the future are offered. Data are available in mapped and tabular summary format.

Seedwhere (Opens in a new Window)

Seedwhere is a tool which maps the similarity of climates across geographic regions. While the tool can be used for any purpose, it was originally developed to support decisions on seed movements and sustainable forest management. Seedwhere estimates similarity of climates between both locations and under varying climate scenarios, including future projected climates. Users can specify the seed source and planting area, species type, and climate variable. Data are presented as an interactive map and are available for download in tabular format.
