Library of climate resources

This is a collection of links to climate datasets, tools, guidance and related resources. The sources include the federal government, provincial and territorial governments, national professional organizations, climate consortia and established international organizations. It can be useful for impact, vulnerability and risk assessments, and for adaptation planning.

Refine your search using the search filters. You can also type up to 5 keywords in the search bar.

Explanation of the different resource types
  • data product - downloadable climate dataset
  • tool - builds on a dataset with further analyses and/or visualization
  • guidance - provides direction on the use of climate information or on conducting climate-related assessments
  • codes and standards - guidance and best practice documents for climate resilient design
  • additional resources include educational and awareness-raising material, impact assessments and scientific syntheses

  • Regional Perspectives Report (2022) (Opens in a new Window)

This report, led by Natural Resources Canada, provides regional perspectives on how climate change is impacting Canadian communities, environment and economy, and how they are adapting. Six regional chapters (Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie Provinces, British Columbia, Northern) were released on a rolling basis between 2020–2022.

Regional, national and international climate modeling (Opens in a new Window)

Regional, national and international climate modeling contains a database of numerous climate variables for Canada and the USA. Historical and future periods are available as modelled point and gridded data. Data are available as 30-year averages (e.g. 1961/90; 1971/2000, etc.), historical month-by-month (from the late 1800s), and daily values (from the 1950s) all for a number of variables, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) climate change scenarios, and climate models. Future time periods include all years to 2100 and 30-year means for 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100.

Seasonal forecasts (Opens in a new Window)

Seasonal forecasts include probabilistic seasonal forecasts of temperature, precipitation, sea surface temperature, snow water equivalent, surface solar radiation, cloud fraction and specific humidity for Canada. Global forecasts of temperature and precipitation are also available. Gridded and projected data are produced by the Canadian seasonal prediction system.

Seasonal forecasts (Opens in a new Window)

Seasonal forecasts include probabilistic and deterministic forecasts as well as past climate trends of temperature, precipitation, sea surface temperature, and snow cover across Canada. Climatological trends of temperature and precipitation are available for each season as well as annual periods over the historical period of 1981-2010. Forecasts for 3, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months into the future are offered. Data are available in mapped and tabular summary format.

Seedwhere (Opens in a new Window)

Seedwhere is a tool which maps the similarity of climates across geographic regions. While the tool can be used for any purpose, it was originally developed to support decisions on seed movements and sustainable forest management. Seedwhere estimates similarity of climates between both locations and under varying climate scenarios, including future projected climates. Users can specify the seed source and planting area, species type, and climate variable. Data are presented as an interactive map and are available for download in tabular format.

Statistically Downscaled Climate Scenarios (Opens in a new Window)

Statistically downscaled scenarios, which provide finer resolution scenarios of climate change from coarser resolution GCM output, are available based on model output from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Individual model results of minimum temperature, maximum temperature and total precipitation are available for historical (1950-2005) and future (2006-2100) time periods. Gridded projections are at a daily temporal resolution and at a spatial resolution of approximately 10km. Future projections are based on the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios.

Statistically Downscaled Climate Scenarios (Opens in a new Window)

Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) offers statistically downscaled daily Canada-wide climate scenarios, at a gridded resolution of 300 arc-seconds (0.0833 degrees, or roughly 6 km x 10 km) for the period 1950-2100. The variables available include daily minimum temperature, maximum temperature, and precipitation. Users may access the scenarios using an interactive map interface that allows users to zoom, pan and select their region of interest using a rectangular-selection tool. Downscaled climate data is available for over 10 models under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5. Data are available for download in NetCDF, ASCII, and Arc formats.

Temperature Change in Canada - Seasonal average temperature departures compared with the 1961–1990 reference value, Canada (Opens in a new Window)

The Temperature Change in Canada indicator measures the yearly and seasonal surface air temperature departures for the years 1948 to 2014. An annual departure (or anomaly) is the difference between the value for a given year and a baseline value. The baseline values used in this indicator are the annual and seasonal temperature averages for the reference period of 1961 to 1990. Information is provided in a number of formats including: static and interactive maps, charts and graphs, HTML and CSV data tables and downloadable reports.
