Library of climate resources

This is a collection of links to climate datasets, tools, guidance and related resources. The sources include the federal government, provincial and territorial governments, national professional organizations, climate consortia and established international organizations. It can be useful for impact, vulnerability and risk assessments, and for adaptation planning.

Explanation of the different resource types
  • data product - downloadable climate dataset
  • tool - builds on a dataset with further analyses and/or visualization
  • guidance - provides direction on the use of climate information or on conducting climate-related assessments
  • codes and standards - guidance and best practice documents for climate resilient design
  • additional resources include educational and awareness-raising material, impact assessments and scientific syntheses

  • Climate Atlas of Canada (Opens in a new Window)

The Climate Atlas of Canada is an interactive tool developed for users to learn about climate change in Canada. It combines climate science, mapping and storytelling. The primary source of climate model data presented in maps, charts and tables is the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium. Statistically downscaled data was derived from 12 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) global climate models for two emissions scenarios: Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5. For comparative purposes, observed data are included in all time-series graphs for the period 1950-2005. The source of the observed data used in the Atlas is Natural Resources Canada.

Climate Risk, Responsibility, and Liability for Municipalities: Exploring Municipalities’ Responsibilities to Consider, Manage, and Disclose Climate Change Flood Risks (Opens in a new Window)

This report was inspired by a need for resources that can help municipalities in Atlantic Canada understand how the climate crisis may affect their responsibilities and liabilities. many municipalities in Atlantic Canada have limited resources to invest in climate change adaptation; some struggle even to access information that would help them to identify the most pressing climate risks within their jurisdictions. Some municipal governments may want to take action but do not know where to begin or how best to prioritize limited resources—uncertainty made all the more paralyzing by the spectre of liability for failing to do the right thing. This report considers climate risk, responsibility, and liability for municipalities in the specific context of climate change flood risks.

Coastal Adaptation Toolkit (Opens in a new Window)

The Coastal Adaptation Toolkit was developed to help Atlantic rural coastal communities and property owners plan for the effects of climate change. It is appropriate for use by communities and property owners that are experiencing coastal issues related to erosion and/or short- and long-term flooding impacts. The intent of the toolkit is to help communities and decision-makers as well as coastal property owners be aware of their coastal environment, the different adaptation options available to them, and the applicability of the options under different scenarios.

Coastal Adaptation Toolkit Adapting to Climate Change in Coastal Communities of Atlantic Canada: Part 1 Guidance for Selecting Adaptation Options (Opens in a new Window)

Part 1 Guidance for Selecting Adaptation Options, introduces climate change adaptation for the coastal regions of the Atlantic Provinces. It describes the five main adaptation approaches, describes climate change impacts in the Atlantic Region, characterizes the coastal environments, presents criteria for adaptation decision-making, and links adaptation tools and strategies to the coastal settings of the Atlantic Provinces.

Coastal Adaptation Toolkit Adapting to Climate Change in Coastal Communities of Atlantic Canada: Part 2 Land Use Planning Tools & Adaptation Options (Opens in a new Window)

Part 2 Land Use Planning Tools Adaptation Options, presents over 50 land use planning tools for coastal climate change adaptation. The tools and examples in this guidance document are the land use planning options of the CLIMAtlantic web-based Coastal Adaptation Tool. The document also includes overviews of the land planning and management frameworks and legislation that could support coastal climate change adaptation in each of the four Atlantic Provinces and First Nations

Coastal Adaptation Toolkit Adapting to Climate Change in Coastal Communities of Atlantic Canada: Part 3 Coastal Intervention Options & Engineering Considerations (Opens in a new Window)

Part 3 Coastal Intervention Options and Engineering Considerations, presents over two dozen intervention options to manage coastal flooding and erosion, describes the suitability of the tools for different coastal conditions and climate change adaptation objectives (e.g., short to long-term, low, medium or high cost), and identifies the technical and permitting requirements for the adaptation approaches. The tools and examples in this volume are the engineering options of the CLIMAtlantic web-based Coastal Adaptation Tool
