Library of climate resources

This is a collection of links to climate datasets, tools, guidance and related resources. The sources include the federal government, provincial and territorial governments, national professional organizations, climate consortia and established international organizations. It can be useful for impact, vulnerability and risk assessments, and for adaptation planning.

Explanation of the different resource types
  • data product - downloadable climate dataset
  • tool - builds on a dataset with further analyses and/or visualization
  • guidance - provides direction on the use of climate information or on conducting climate-related assessments
  • codes and standards - guidance and best practice documents for climate resilient design
  • additional resources include educational and awareness-raising material, impact assessments and scientific syntheses

  • Climate-Resilient Buildings and Core Public Infrastructure: an assessment of the impact of climate change on climatic design data in Canada (Opens in a new Window)

The report provides an assessment of how climatic design data relevant to users of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2015, Table C-2) and the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC/CSA S6 2014, Annex A3.1) might change as the climate continues to warm.

Health of Canadians in a Changing Climate (Opens in a new Window)

This assessment is the first comprehensive study of current and projected risks from climate change to the health of Canadians since 2008. It was developed by a team of more than 80 subject matter experts from regional and federal health authorities and academic institutions across Canada. It addresses the evolving knowledge needs of government decision makers, civil society organizations, and individual Canadians by providing evidence-based and, where possible, quantitative information to help people understand how Canada’s climate is changing, and the effects on health and health systems, including implications for those most at risk in society. For key risks to health, it also examines current efforts to prepare for climate change, from individual to national levels, and explores what further efforts are needed. The potential for very large co-benefits to health of well-designed measures to reduce GHGs are also explored.

ISO 14091 - Adaptation to climate change - guidelines on vulnerability, impacts and risk assessment (Opens in a new Window)

This document gives guidelines for assessing the risks related to the potential impacts of climate change. It describes how to understand vulnerability and how to develop and implement a sound risk assessment in the context of climate change. It can be used for assessing both present and future climate change risks. Risk assessment according to this document provides a basis for climate change adaptation planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation for any organization, regardless of size, type and nature.

Métis Climate Change and Health Vulnerability Assessment (MCCHVA) (Opens in a new Window)

This comprehensive report examines the relationship between climate change and Métis health and wellbeing. Métis peoples living in western Canada are uniquely sensitive to the impacts of climate change due to their dependence on the land for their identity, culture, livelihoods and resource dependent economies; climate impacts will affect their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The report reviews health vulnerabilities and Métis-relevant social determinants of health; climate risks by each governing area and type of hazard such as forest fire, extreme heat, and flooding; knowledge gaps; and, key areas for action by each Metis governing body. The report recognizes the unique environmental knowledge of the Métis Nation and the strength of their communities, which provide examples of resiliency that can be used in adapting to climate change. The report closes with recommendations.
